4 Spots I Don’t Like to Take Photos at in Rome (And Why You Should Reconsider Them Too!)

Rome is undeniably one of the most photogenic cities in the world, with its stunning historical sites, charming cobblestone streets, and endless beauty waiting around every corner, and when you come as a tourist visiting Rome is a one in a lifetime experience for sure. As a destination wedding photographer, I’ve had the pleasure of capturing couples against the backdrop of some of the city’s most breathtaking spots. However, not every famous location in Rome is ideal for photoshoots. Some are overcrowded, under construction, or simply don’t have the magical ambiance that makes for perfect memories. Here are five spots in Rome that I try to avoid for photos—and why you might want to rethink them too.

1. Trevi Fountain

Let’s begin with the Trevi Fountain—arguably the most iconic fountain in the world. It’s a true masterpiece of Baroque architecture, and its beauty is breathtaking. However, it’s also a major tourist hotspot that is constantly swarmed by visitors. Regardless of the time of day, from the crack of dawn to late at night, you’ll find the fountain packed with people eager to toss in a coin and make a wish. Even at sunrise, when you might think you could enjoy a moment of solitude, you’ll still need to navigate through a crowd for that perfect shot. The sheer volume of people can diminish the romantic vibe you might have envisioned for your photos. Furthermore, security around the fountain is tight, making it challenging to set up for a calm, uninterrupted photoshoot. I highly recommend we seek out a more tranquil (and equally stunning) location to capture your love story.

2. The Spanish Steps

The Spanish Steps are another famous Roman landmark that may seem like a dreamy location for photos—but the reality can be quite different. This picturesque staircase, adorned with blooming azaleas in the spring, attracts throngs of tourists, particularly in the afternoons. When you arrive, you might find people lounging on the steps, which can make it nearly impossible to get clean, beautiful shots without unwanted crowds in the background. To add to the challenge, recent restrictions discourage sitting or lingering for too long on the steps, leaving little room for a leisurely photoshoot. While the Spanish Steps are certainly worth a visit for their beauty and history, I wouldn’t recommend them as a prime location for capturing the intimate moments of your wedding or elopement.

3. Campo de’ Fiori

Campo de’ Fiori is a lively square known for its vibrant market and bustling atmosphere, but it often feels more chaotic than charming. The square can become overcrowded, particularly during market hours, which makes it challenging to capture the romantic ambiance you might want for your photos. The busy stalls, with vendors calling out their wares, can detract from the picturesque backdrops that many couples seek. While it’s a delightful spot for people-watching and indulging in local flavors, it may not provide the serene environment that is ideal for capturing intimate moments. Instead, I’d suggest exploring some of the quieter, more enchanting corners of Rome, where the beauty and history shine through without the distraction of crowds.

4. Vatican City

Vatican City is a bucket-list destination for countless travelers, known for its religious significance and breathtaking architecture. While St. Peter’s Basilica is a marvel of design, it’s also frequently overwhelmed with tourists, especially during peak seasons. The crowded atmosphere can detract from the intimate and peaceful feel you might desire for your photos. Additionally, because the Vatican is an active religious site, there are specific restrictions regarding where and how photos can be taken. For those looking for a more serene and romantic backdrop, I recommend exploring the picturesque neighborhoods of Trastevere or the Aventine Hill. These areas offer stunning views of St. Peter’s from a distance while allowing you to capture your love story in a more tranquil setting. Plus, you’ll find charming streets and vibrant local culture that will make your photos truly unique. It’s also worth noting that you would technically need a permit to take photos in certain areas, like the columns in St. Peter’s Square, as Vatican City is an independent state. I once encountered police asking for my permit there, so it’s best to be prepared!

A Note About Rome’s Ongoing Restoration Work

It’s essential to remember that Rome is a city in constant evolution, as it preserves and restores its historical treasures. With the upcoming 2025 Jubilee, many sites across the city are undergoing restoration, which means you may encounter scaffolding or restricted access at some of the iconic spots you might have on your list. But don’t let that discourage you! The beauty of Rome lies not only in its famed landmarks but also in its hidden corners, charming streets, and lesser-known monuments that are just as stunning—and often more peaceful—for your photos. The 2025 Jubilee, also known as the Holy Year, is a significant religious event in the Catholic Church, traditionally held every 25 years. It’s a time of pilgrimage, prayer, and spiritual renewal for millions of Catholics worldwide. During the Jubilee, special blessings and indulgences are granted to those who visit the four major basilicas in Rome—St. Peter’s, St. John Lateran, St. Paul Outside the Walls, and Santa Maria Maggiore. The event also inspires a wave of restoration projects across the city, as Rome prepares for an influx of visitors, making it both a spiritually and culturally rich time to experience the Eternal City.

If you’re dreaming of a Roman elopement or destination wedding, I’m here to help guide you through the best spots to capture your love story, ensuring you have a stress-free and memorable experience. There’s so much more to Rome than the tourist-filled landmarks, and I’d love to show you the magic of the Eternal City from a different perspective!
