7 Tips for Planning your Elopement in Rome

September 11, 2024

Planning an elopement in Rome is like stepping into a real-life fairytale,
but there are a few key things to keep in mind to ensure your experience is as magical as possible

Here are some tips to help you navigate the logistics and make the most of your romantic adventure in the Eternal City.

1. Book Your Accommodation Wisely

One of the first things you’ll want to do is book a great hotel, and I recommend using the app/website I also use which is Booking.com. It’s super easy to navigate, plus you get great deals, and most reservations come with free cancellation—perfect for those last-minute changes. When choosing a neighborhood, I suggest avoiding the area around the train station (Termini) as it can be quite “hectic and less charming”. Instead, opt for the Pantheon/Campo dei Fiori area. It’s central, beautiful, and within walking distance of many of Rome’s iconic sights, plus easy to get to using public transportation or taxi.

2. Consider the Time of Year

Rome is stunning year-round, but the best times for an elopement are spring and fall when the weather is mild and the city isn’t overrun with tourists. Summer can be quite hot, and winter, while quieter, might not offer the same vibrant atmosphere. Keep in mind that Rome is not far from the sea and is very humid, so you might feel way hotter/colder than the thermometer really shows.

3. Plan for Crowds

Even during the off-season, Rome’s popular spots like the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, and Spanish Steps can get crowded. Consider scheduling your ceremony early in the morning or at sunset to avoid the biggest crowds and to capture that perfect golden light in your photos. I can easily recommend the best spots for your photos!

4. Check for Local Holidays and Events

One thing that many couples overlook is checking for local holidays or major events that might be happening during their visit. Rome hosts various religious festivals, public holidays, and events that can lead to crowded streets, closed attractions, or limited public services. Before booking, make sure to check a local calendar so you won’t be caught off guard by any unexpected closures or large crowds. Most important ones are the catholic holidays, Epiphany on January 6, Liberation Day on April 25, Labor Day on May 1, Republic Day on June 2, Saints Peter and Paul on June 29, Ferragosto/Assumption Day on August 15.

5. Make Dining Reservations

Rome is a foodie’s paradise, so take advantage of the incredible cuisine. However, popular restaurants (even those hyped up by instagram) fill up quickly, especially in tourist-heavy areas. Make reservations ahead of time, especially if there’s a special place you’re dying to try. No need to go months ahead, but maybe a couple days. Keep in mind though, that some spots do not take reservations, like pizza restaurants.

6. Transportation

Getting around Rome is easier than you might think. Most of the major attractions are within walking distance if you stay in a central neighborhood like the Pantheon or Campo de’ Fiori — as mentioned above. For longer distances, consider using taxis or ride-sharing services like the FreeNow app or iTaxi app. Avoid renting a car—it’s more hassle than it’s worth with Rome’s traffic and limited parking plus the limited traffic zone. Public transportation works well in some areas, but there are currently a lot of works around for the 2025 Jubilee so there might be closures and/or strikes.

7. Prepare for Cash Payments (and Use Bank ATMs)

While Rome is modern in many ways, cash is still king in many places, especially smaller restaurants, cafes, and local markets where people may prefer (although they are obligated to have card payment options). Make sure to carry some euros for those situations to make it easier and quicker. However, avoid using mobile ATMs that you might find in convenience stores or small shops. Instead, use ATMs directly at banks or reputable currency exchange shops for safer transactions and better rates. Planning ahead will save you from any last-minute scrambling for cash.

Eloping in Rome is an unforgettable experience, and with a little planning, it can be everything you’ve dreamed of and more. Keep these tips in mind, and you’ll be well on your way to a seamless, stress-free celebration in one of the most romantic cities in the world.
